Method & limitations

This is an experimental geometric daylight and solar screening tool. Draw a closed room, mark allowed window stretches, and let a seeded multi-objective search vary the facade. All computation and imported files stay in your browser.

What is calculated

Ray visibility through actual openings; direct sunlight and normalised isotropic diffuse sky; glazing visible transmission; incident radiation; and a fixed-SHGC admitted solar-gain estimate. Fast and refined runs share these assumptions. There is no interior interreflection, detailed angular glazing optics, DGP or certification assessment. Thermal-enabled studies add a separate annual reduced-order heat and moisture balance.

Useful sampled daylight is the area-weighted percentage of evaluated sensor-hours within the chosen lux band. It is not annual UDI or sDA. Solar results are sampled means, not annual energy or cooling loads. Shading area counts one generating surface per device, not both rendered faces. External blockers and the opaque room shell stop rays.

Reference and adaptations

Adapted from the existing Jamshed Bhote facade study: local-standard-time solar position, north rotation, direct/diffuse separation, normalised sky integral, triangle ray checks, exterior shading construction, weather units, legends, and processing feedback. The new engine generates room-specific geometry and a bounding-volume hierarchy. Fixed OBJ inputs, PHP execution, reflected-light approximations, wind and the original visual sky field are omitted. The displayed sun is a geometric preview; only evaluated candidates receive numerical results.

Sampling and optimisation

Fast: 15th of 12 months, interval-ending hours 10/12/14/16 evaluated at their midpoints; up to 96 floor cells and 24 sky directions. Refined: 5th/15th/25th, interval-ending hours 10–17; up to 256 cells and 96 directions. Samples have equal weights; results describe this selected sample set, not a reconstructed annual distribution. Grid cells are clipped to the room triangulation and weighted by actual area.

NSGA-II uses population 24, nondominated ranking, crowding distance and mixed categorical/numerical variation. Quick search stops after 48 trials (2 generations); Standard after 240 (10), and Deep after 480 (20). The percentage is completion of that chosen budget, not the entire continuous design space. Trials include duplicates and rejected geometry. There is no guarantee of a global optimum. Refinement can change the apparent frontier.

Drawing and navigation

Weather provenance

EPW direct normal/diffuse horizontal radiation and illuminance are read separately. Radiation interval totals in Wh/m² are treated as interval-mean W/m² for these one-hour records. Hour-ending records use midpoint solar position. Missing sampled fields are rejected; no fixed luminous-efficacy substitution is invented.

Annual thermal model

One well-mixed air node and moisture balance; layered 1D finite-volume opaque conduction; massless glazing; implicit integration; internal convection and conservative area-weighted longwave exchange; exterior solar absorption, convection and sky exchange. Fast: ≤100mm material cells, 30-minute steps, 10°/5° direct-solar visibility bins. Refined: ≤50mm cells, 10-minute steps, exact hourly sun directions. Thermal analysis uses the full 8760/8784-hour weather year, separately from sampled daylight. A 20% immediate-convective admitted-solar fraction is assumed; 80% is assigned to first-hit interior surfaces/direct rays and area-weighted surfaces/diffuse sky. Exterior film convection 15 W/m²K and reference radiative exchange 4.7 W/m²K are approximations. No reflected shortwave ground term. Heating, equipment curves, thermal bridges, moisture buffering and condensation transport are omitted. AC-on uses ideal sensible cooling and independent dehumidification; fixed-COP electricity excludes fans/reheat. Peak is an hourly weather-year peak, not equipment sizing. Surface MRT uses area-weighted fourth-power absolute temperatures; all surfaces share the specified emissivity. operative temperature is 50% air/50% MRT. Warm-up repeats the first seven days up to ten times; temperature states and moisture are checked for convergence. Supersaturation is flagged rather than silently clipped. Material layers, boundary conditions, glazing assumptions, schedules, weather and objective profile are part of the frozen study.

Server processing and privacy

Daylight, thermal analysis and optimisation run on this website’s PHP server. Room geometry, settings and weather inputs are sent to the server for those calculations. Plan editing and 3D display run in your browser. An internet connection is required for calculations. Browser autosave and project JSON export preserve your own work. Closing the page stops further calculation requests; inactive server jobs expire automatically.

Grids & presentation

Drawing grids, snap intervals, model ground grids and guide overlays are display tools. Analysis target cell sizes change sensor sampling and create a revised study; all candidates within a run share the same area-weighted cells. Fast and refined cell caps remain 96 and 256. Sensor boundaries show clipped integration pieces, so triangulation may split a nominal grid square. Focus view hides setup panels while keeping search, actual results and export actions accessible. Keyboard: V select, R rectangle, L polyline, W window, B blocker, H pan; F focus; Escape exit.
